Here's the 4 speed... or 7 speed that I row. Lots of fun, even if it's the opposite of a snickety honda or smooth BMW shifter.

The 4+3 OD is one of life's biggest wonders....

I recommend we contain the shifter thing to one thread or else it'll be like the theme days again and everything else will get ignored/pushed down.

Early C4 Corvettes. It's the Doug Nash 4+3

Now how about that Dodge Colt twin-stick eight speed?

But you've got a 'Vette, it doesn't matter.

Yeah, '84 to '88 corvettes like they said. It's an interesting transmission for sure!

It seemed to be stalling a bit so I made this post. Theme days were great, though! (Manual transmissions in history = most fun I've had in my life)

Hell no. Do you remember the Ask Me Anything one? There were over 50 posts about it. That was horrible.

Why is it a 4+3? Is one gear locked out in one range, and if so which?

Eight speed manual? Ha! A modern Corvette and a brand new Porsche are less advanced than Dodge was in the 80's!

I'm pretty much neutral on the issue, but I do enjoy some of the themes. AMA was not one of my favorites, but it's mildly entertaining for us no-life people.

It's just not fun when everything else gets decimated by 5 word posts. Again, I don't mean to offend.

The transmission is basically a Borg Warner Super T-10 connected to a power glide automatic in the rear to provide the overdrive ratios. I generally just shift through the first 4 regular gears, then press the button on the shifter to put in OD. The 2nd OD gear and 3rd OD gear basically bridge the gaps between normal 2nd and 3rd, and normal 3rd and 4th. The 4th overdrive gear gives low highway RPMs as your typical 6th gear would. It pretty much works like a gear splitter by combining different ratios.

None taken! I just don't feel that Oppo should become too regulated or have a serious atmosphere like some sites...

Hey, there's a C4 posted to Oppo! What were we talking about again?
I do agree with you to a pretty large extent. Many a Friday Evening Question, would you rather own, or short article would be lost to themes. I just quit with so many quality posts and tried to get into themes when they came around and I dare say that I have a *bit* of fun during some of them. I definitely don't want it to become like the FP "look at the $80k car I just bought!" The intros one was basically that plus look at my girlfriend. Show off shit. Someone earlier posted a photo dump of their new Cayman GTS under the question "what do you think about the Alcantra steering wheel? I have one in my porsche!" The latest Automobile magazine had an article with overwhelming praise for the Z32 as a classic sports car BTW. I meant to post it.

Had one in an '84. Screwed up and installed a low temp thermostat when I replaced the radiator...apparently the OD doesn't activate until the car is up to heat (I want to say 170 degrees?). My thermostat was like 10 degrees over that, so I'd be in OD, the thermostat would open, and I wouldn't be in OD until it closed again. Fun times!

Damn, that must have been a PITA. They are quite complex transmissions in some ways, but I really like mine from the standpoint of it being quirky, involving , and part of what makes the car a "classic car" rather than purely cheap HP.

It wasn't my proudest repair moment, though I was pleased with how quickly I diagnosed my screw up. You hardly ever see 4+3s anymore...I think in '84 something like 10% of the cars were sticks. Wouldn't mind having mine back at all.

Oooh, an overdrive. Volvo used these for years rather than develop a five speed box.
Today's trivia: one of the last vehicles to use one was one of the previous Ford Transits, also because Ford were too mean to build a five speed.
